Creative Ways to Teach Memory Verses

1) Pictures

Some memory verses lend themselves naturally to being split into sections. If those sections can easily bring an image to mind, this is a great tool to use.

For example, the Lord’s Prayer :

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.”

As you can see in the image on the right, the passage has been divided into “bite-sized” pieces, and an image is paired with each section.

My favorite way to use this method with students is to give them each of the different pictures on separate pieces of paper. Have them practice laying out the images in order and saying that section of the passage as they do.

It might take a few weeks of working at it, but over time, they will be able to use the pictures as prompts and say the whole passage from memory.

2) Copy Work

While reading and hearing are great tools for memorization, there is something special about writing verses out by hand.

Oxford Learning explains:

“One of the key advantages of writing by hand is its tactile nature. When writing or drawing, there is a direct connection between perceptual understanding and motor execution.”

What does that mean? It means that the process of writing by hand reinforces memory pathways and enhances comprehension and retention. This is a phenomenon well-documented in cognitive psychology.

If you’d like to easily create a memory verse handwriting page, try the handwriting tool on Worksheet Wonder Pro. Simply type in, or copy and paste, the verse you want your students to practice.

You can choose to have students write the verse independently or trace the verse for younger learners.

3) Song

Another amazing way to memorize scripture is through song.

There are a myriad of songs that you might not even know are directly from passages that you sing already. Some include:

  • As the Deer
  • Create in Me a Clean Heart
  • Seek Ye First
  • The Fruit of the Spirit
  • Thy Word
  • The Joy of the Lord

If singing is something your students love to do, try incorporating a song to teach them the verse you’re working on.

There is also an incredible project being put together to put all of the Psalms to music. It’s called Timeless: Ancient Psalms for the Church Today.  I highly recommend checking it out and see if it's something that your students could use to memorize the Psalms.

I hope you'll give one of these creative ways of memorization a try and let us know how it goes in the comments!
