Six Ways to Advertise for VBS

Vacation Bible School is right around the corner, and many churches are struggling to get the word out. Here are just a few ideas of how you can spread the word.

1) First and Foremost: Pray

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. - Psalm 16:3

The very first thing you should be doing, even before you set the plans to have a VBS, is to talk to the one who is in charge. He loves the children in our community so much more than we ever could, and He wants to reach them with the gospel. Seek His wisdom and direction before all.

2) Direct invitation

If you were to ask people why they started coming to church and why they are a Christian, the majority of people would say it was because someone invited them.

Provide your members with flyers to pass to their friends, family, and neighbors. Make sure to make them available to everyone. Sometimes it's the elderly member who has been talking to her neighbors with young children who is able to share the message the most effectively.

3) Local Advertising

If you're able to put up a banner in front of your building, or update a notice board, this is a great way of sharing with every person who drives by what is going to be happening.

Some towns also have local newspapers or notice boards. They are great opportunities to let your community know about VBS.

Don't be afraid to make a video and show off who you are as a congregation.

4) Facebook

We are living in a tech generation, and most people are living online. Join your local Facebook communities and advertise directly to the people who live in your area.

Warning: all communities have different rules, so make sure to check those before posting, and it is always a good idea to contact an admin and get approval before putting up an ad.

5) Yard Signs in Members’ Yards

Use a local printer or an online printer like VistaPrint to make up yard signs. Have members place these in their yard the week before VBS.

Include a QR code for easy access to your webpage and/or online registration.

6) Ask Local Businesses to Help

Are there local business owners in your congregation?

Does your community have a preschool, library, coffee shop, or ice cream shop that might support your congregation's VBS?

Contact businesses and locations, and see if they would be open to letting you place flyers in their establishments.

What are the ways you find helpful for advertising church events in your community?
